It tells the story of a great revolt. This fight happened between 170 BC and 134 BC.

A Greek king named Antiochus IV Epiphanes ruled the land. He tried to stop Jewish ways. He even took sacred items from the Temple in Jerusalem. He made new laws that forbade Jewish practices. This led a man named Mattathias to start a rebellion. Mattathias and his five sons fought for their faith.

One son was named Judas Maccabeus. Some think his name means "hammer."

His group of fighters became known as the Maccabees. They had many wins and losses in their wars.

In 164 BC, the rebels won back the Temple. They rededicated it to God. This event is the start of the holiday called Hanukkah. After Judas died, his brothers Jonathan and Simon led the people. They helped create a free kingdom.

Many churches use this book today. It is part of their sacred writings. Other groups do not use it as a holy book.
