Amos was a very important figure in the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament. He is known as one of the Twelve Minor Prophets.

Long before he became a prophet, Amos had a very different life. He worked as a shepherd and a farmer of sycamore fig trees. He came from a place called Teqoa. Some scholars believe Teqoa was in the southern Kingdom of Judah. Others suggest it might have been in Galilee. This background shows he was not part of a professional group of prophets. He even said he was not a son of a prophet. This made his message feel very different to the people of his time.

Amos traveled to the northern Kingdom of Israel to share his messages. He focused his preaching on cities like Samaria and Bethel. At this time, the land was ruled by King Jeroboam II. This was a period of peace and growth for the empire. The land grew from the Orontes river in the north to the Dead Sea in the south. However, this wealth brought many problems to the people. Many rich people were not being fair to those with less. There was a big gap between the wealthy and the poor. Amos saw that social corruption was happening everywhere.

His main message was about justice and how people should live. Amos taught that God cares most about how we treat others. He believed that religious ceremonies and sacrifices were not enough. To him, being a good person was more important than performing rituals. He taught that God is powerful and expects righteousness. He believed that if people were not fair, their relationship with God would change. He was also an uncompromising monotheist. This means he believed in only one God and did not admit other gods existed. He wanted people to practice economic justice to keep their nation strong.

Amos is often seen as the first prophet to write down his messages. This was a big change in how prophets worked. He likely wrote his book after he was forced to leave Israel. A priest named Amaziah told him to leave the kingdom. Because people would not listen to his voice, he wrote so they could read. This allowed his ideas to reach people in the future. His words influenced other famous prophets like Isaiah. Some historical records say Amos was eventually killed by the son of Amaziah. He was believed to have returned to his home to die.

Today, the ideas of Amos still connect to many things we know. His famous words about justice have been used in modern speeches. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. used his ideas in his "I Have a Dream" speech. Many people still find his call for fairness very powerful. Different churches also honor him on special feast days. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, his day is June 15. Catholic tradition celebrates him on March 31. Even in Islamic tradition, he is recognized as a prophet sent to the people. His life remains a major part of religious history.
