Athaliah was a powerful queen from the ancient past. She was the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel of Israel.

Her family belonged to a group known as the Omrides. Athaliah married King Jehoram of Judah to make a treaty. This marriage joined the kingdoms of Israel and Judah together. She eventually became a queen regnant, which means she ruled by herself.

Her time as a ruler began after a period of great change. First, King Jehoram of Judah ruled for eight years. He was the husband of Athaliah. After he died, their son Ahaziah became the king. Athaliah then became the queen mother, or gebirah. When Ahaziah died, Athaliah seized the throne for herself. She wanted to hold onto her power at any cost. To do this, she killed many people in the royal family. This included many young children who could have been kings.

One person worked hard to stop the queen's plan. A woman named Jehosheba was the sister of King Ahaziah. She managed to rescue a baby boy from the purge. This baby was named Jehoash, the son of Ahaziah and Zibiah.

A priest named Jehoiada helped hide the child in secret. Jehoash grew up away from the queen's sight. He stayed safe while Athaliah ruled for several years.

Athaliah ruled Judah around 841 to 835 BC. Some scholars give slightly different dates for her reign. During her rule, she established the worship of Baal in Judah. Baal was a god used by the Canaanites. Six years into her rule, the secret was revealed. Jehoiada the priest helped Jehoash become king in Solomon's Temple. Athaliah rushed to the Temple to stop this change. However, she was killed by captains outside the Temple walls.

Many people have told the story of Athaliah through art. Writers like Giovanni Boccaccio wrote about her in famous books. A French writer named Jean Racine wrote a play called Athalie.

The composer Felix Mendelssohn even wrote music for that play. One famous piece is called the "War March of the Priests." The musician Handel also wrote an oratorio about her life. Her story remains a famous part of history and art.
