Many people find her story inspiring because of her bravery. She lived during a time when Jews were living away from their homeland. Her life shows how one person can try to help their whole community.

The story begins when King Ahasuerus looks for a new queen. Esther was the daughter of Abihail and the cousin of Mordecai.

Mordecai told Esther to keep her Jewish identity a secret. The king fell in love with her and made her queen. Later, a high official named Haman became an enemy to the Jews. He made a plan to kill them on a specific day. Esther had to decide if she would risk her life to speak up.

History and scholars have many different ideas about this story. Some people believe it is a work of fiction. They note that Persian kings usually married only from noble families.

Others think the king might be Xerxes I, who ruled from 486 to 465 BCE. Scholars also debate if the story explains an older holiday. There are two versions of the book. One is shorter and found in Hebrew Bibles. The other is longer and found in Greek Bibles.

There are many important names and places in this account. The story mentions the citadel of Susa as a setting.

Haman used lots called Purim to pick a date for his plan. This date was the thirteenth day of the month of Adar. Esther asked her community to fast and pray for three days. After Haman was removed, the king allowed the Jews to defend themselves. This led to a time of safety and celebration.

This story is still very important to many people today. It is the reason for the Jewish holiday called Purim.

During Purim, people give gifts and share food. They celebrate the day the Jewish people were saved. Some people even visit special sites to remember them. In Hamadan, Iran, there is a shrine called the tomb of Esther and Mordechai. This story helps people think about courage and standing up for others.
