Nehemiah is a famous leader from the ancient past. He is the main person in the Book of Nehemiah. This book tells the story of his work in Jerusalem. He lived during the Second Temple period. Nehemiah had a very important job in the royal palace. He was the king's cup-bearer. This means he helped serve drinks to the king. One day, he learned that Jerusalem was in a bad state. The people there were in distress. The city walls were broken down and ruined. Nehemiah asked the king for permission to go back and rebuild the city. Around 445 or 444 BC, the king sent him to Judah. The king gave him letters of support and timber from the royal forest.

Rebuilding the city was a very hard job. Nehemiah had to face enemies on all sides. These included Samarians, Ammonites, and Arabs. Despite this opposition, the people worked very fast. They rebuilt the walls in only 52 days. They fixed many different gates. These included the Sheep Gate and the Fish Gate. They also worked on the Hananeel Tower and the Dung Gate.

Nehemiah did more than just build walls. He also worked to help the community. He helped make sure people followed the laws of Moses. He worked with a man named Ezra to share these laws. He also helped with rules about debt and marriage. Nehemiah served as governor for twelve years. He ruled with justice and righteousness. Later, he returned to Jerusalem to make sure the Temple was kept pure.

Scholars have many different ideas about Nehemiah today. Some think the story is a true historical account. Others, called minimalists, doubt if he was a real person. Even so, Nehemiah is a very important figure in many traditions. He is a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. People there honor him on the Sunday of the Holy Forefathers. His story has also influenced how people worship in synagogues.
