This region is where many early civilizations began. Nabonidus was the last native ruler of this land. He was also the last independent king of Babylon.

Nabonidus was known for being a very unique person. Some scholars call him the first archaeologist. This is because he seemed to study very old things. He was also a religious reformer. He wanted to change how people honored their gods. He worked to increase the status of the moon god, Sîn.

At the same time, he decreased the status of Marduk. Marduk was the traditional national god of Babylon. This caused a lot of debate among the people.

It is hard to know exactly where Nabonidus came from. He never claimed to be related to previous kings. This suggests he was not part of the Chaldean dynasty. His father was named Nabu-balatsu-iqbi. Nabonidus called his father a wise and heroic prince.

Nabonidus had a very busy and strange reign. From 552 BC to 543 BC, he lived in exile. He stayed in a place called Tayma in Arabia.
