Akkadian Empire

history Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Akkadian Empire was a huge and important kingdom in ancient Mesopotamia. It is often called the first empire in history. Before this empire, many small city-states lived in the region of Sumer. These cities were independent and ruled themselves. The Akkadian Empire changed everything by bringing many different groups under one rule.

This new way of ruling used a central government to manage a vast area. It stretched from the Mediterranean Sea all the way to Iran. The empire also reached from Anatolia down to the Persian Gulf.

This empire worked through a planned economy. This means the government helped manage how people lived and worked. They relied on farming, taxes, and trade to keep the land strong. They even made connections with the faraway Indus Valley.

To keep things organized, they used the Akkadian language for most business. This language became a common way for many people to talk to each other. However, they still used the older Sumerian language for religious stories and literature.

A leader named Sargon of Akkad started this great empire. He rose to power after he defeated the Sumerian king Lugal-zage-si. Sargon built a strong foundation for his family to follow.

His sons, Rimush and Manishtushu, worked to keep the empire together. Later, his grandson Naram-Sin became a very famous ruler. Naram-Sin was so powerful that he called himself a living god. He even used the grand title "King of the Four Quarters."

We know about these people through many amazing objects. Historians study clay tablets and stone carvings to learn the truth. One important person was Enheduanna, who was the daughter of Sargon. She was a high priestess and is the first named author in history.

We also find beautiful art like the Bassetki Statue. Other clues come from small stone seals used to mark belongings. These items help us see how the empire lived and worked.

Even though the empire was strong, it eventually faced many hard jobs. Internal revolts and fights within the royal family made it weak. A very long drought also caused a major crisis. This dry weather led to crop failures and famine.

Because people were hungry and the cities were declining, the empire became vulnerable. Finally, a group called the Gutians invaded the land. This combination of weather and war brought the end of the Akkadian Empire.
