The people lived in the valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. These rivers provided water for farming. Farmers grew a lot of grain and other crops. Because they grew more food than they needed, they could build large settlements. These settlements grew into busy cities. This allowed a new way of life to begin.

Life in Sumer was organized around many independent city-states.

Each city had its own special temple. These temples were built for a specific god or goddess. A leader ruled each city. This leader might be a king, called a lugal, or a priestly governor, called an ensi. The leaders were closely tied to the religious rites of the city. Canals and boundary stones separated the different cities from one another. This helped people manage their land and water.

Sumerian history began a long time ago during the Copper Age.

Many people believe the Ubaidians were the first to build a civilization there. They drained marshes for farming and started making things like pottery and metalwork. Later, during the Uruk period, cities became even larger. Some cities had more than 10,000 people living in them.
