Sumerian people lived near the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The rivers helped farmers grow lots of grain. Because they had extra food, they built big cities. These cities were called city-states. Each city had its own temple. A king or a priest ruled the city.

Sumerians were also among the first to write. They used writing to keep track of things.

They lived in many famous cities. Some of these were Uruk and Ur.

Over time, things changed for the Sumerians. Around 2270 BC, the Akkadians conquered them. Later, the Sumerians had a period of rule again. This was called the Third Dynasty of Ur. Even after they lost power, their language stayed important. Many years later, people found these old cities. They studied the items left behind.
