history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Akkad was a very important city in the ancient world. It served as the capital for the Akkadian Empire. This empire was the main political power in Mesopotamia for about 150 years. This happened during the last third of the 3rd millennium BC.

Even though it was a huge center of power, its exact location is still a mystery. Archaeologists and historians have searched for the city for a long time. They use old clues to try to find where it once stood.

Finding the city is a hard job for experts today. Many people believe it was located near the Tigris River. Some suggest it was close to the city of Baghdad in modern Iraq. Other ideas place it near places called Eshnunna or Sippar.

One possible site is a large area called Ishan Mizyad. This site is about 15 kilometers away from Babylon. The Tigris River has moved its banks many times over the years. This movement makes it very difficult to find the original city walls.

Many famous leaders once ruled from this great capital. King Sargon of Akkad ruled from 2334 to 2279 BC. Another ruler was Manishtushu, who ruled around 2270 BC. He was known for bringing ships to the city quay.

These ships carried black stone from far away mountains. A third ruler was Naram-Sin, who was a very powerful king. His people even built a temple to honor him after a revolt.

Religion was a big part of life in Akkad. The main goddess of the city was Ishtar-Annunitum. People often called her Warlike Ishtar. Her husband was a god named Ilaba.

The people also built many beautiful temples for their gods. One famous temple was called the E.ul.mas. Many different kings from later times tried to fix or rebuild these sacred places. They wanted to honor the gods of the ancient city.

We learn about Akkad through very old writings. These are called cuneiform tablets. These tablets tell us about kings, slaves, and even moon eclipses. Some people even mention Akkad in the Hebrew Bible.

The name of the city might not even be from the Akkadian language. It might come from older languages like Sumerian or Hurrian. Even though we cannot walk its streets today, the story of Akkad lives on through these ancient records.
