It sat on the western bank of the Tigris River. Today, this area is in the Saladin Governorate of Iraq. For about 3,000 years, people lived and worked in this city. It served as a capital for the Assyrian Empire at different times. It was also a semi-independent state during the Parthian Empire. The city was built on a mountain spur with a triangular shape.

The city was divided into different areas. The northern part was higher than the rest of the land. This high area held many important public buildings. It was home to a large palace and several grand temples. These temples were built for many different gods. Some of these gods included Anu, Adad, Sin, Shamash, and Ištar.

The city also had a double city layout. This helped organize the many people living there.

Assur has a very long and busy history.

During the Old Assyrian period, it was a major hub for trade. This trade network stretched through Syria and Anatolia. The city was run by a group called a city assembly. This assembly made laws and handled legal matters. They also appointed an official called a limum to manage money. Later, the city was under the control of the Ur III Empire. A governor named Zariqum once lived and worked there.

Learning about Assur helps us understand the past. The site is now a World Heritage Site. This means it is a place of great value to everyone. In 2003, it was added to a list of sites in danger. This was because a proposed dam might flood the area. Scientists still use new tools like drones to study the ruins. They use magnetometers and core samples to look deep underground.
