The city was a very important hub for trading. It was one of the richest cities in the classical world. It served as the capital for the Punic empire. This empire controlled many parts of the Mediterranean sea. People from many lands traveled there to do business.

The city was built in a very smart way. It sat on a piece of land with sea inlets. This location helped the people control sea trade. All ships had to pass near the coast of Tunisia.

The city had two huge, man-made harbors. One harbor was for merchant ships to trade goods. The other was a circular port for the navy. This military port held 220 warships at one time.

Massive walls protected the city from attacks. Some walls were 13 meters high and 10 meters thick.

Legends tell us how the city first began. A queen named Dido is said to be the founder. She originally came from a place called Tyre.

In the myth, she asked a local tribe for land. They said she could have as much land as an oxhide covered. Dido cut the hide into thin strips to mark the city. Whether this story is true is still debated by historians. The city grew from a small colony into a giant empire. It became a leader in the Mediterranean for many years.

History shows that Carthage faced many big changes. In 146 BC, the Roman Republic fought the Third Punic War. This war lasted for nearly three years. The Romans eventually destroyed the ancient city.

A century later, the Romans rebuilt it as Roman Carthage. It became a major city in the Roman Empire. Later, the Byzantine Empire held the city. In 698, Umayyad forces destroyed it again. Many different groups lived in and around the ruins over time.

Today, we can still learn from the ruins of Carthage. Archeologists have studied the site for a long time. Christian Tuxen Falbe first surveyed the area in 1830.
