Historians are not sure if she was a real person. Most of what we know comes from much later writings. These stories help us understand how people imagined the past. She remains a very important person in Western art and books.

In many versions, Dido had a hard life in Tyre. She was a princess who shared power with her brother, Pygmalion.

After their father died, Pygmalion became the only ruler. He was a tyrant, which means a harsh leader. He even killed Dido's husband, Acerbas, to take his gold. Dido had to be very clever to escape him. She tricked her brother using bags of sand to look like wealth. Then, she led her followers on a long journey to find safety.

Her journey led her to the coast of North Africa. Dido wanted to build a new home for her people. She made a deal to get a small piece of land. The locals said she could have as much land as an oxhide could cover.

Dido was smart and cut the hide into thin strips. She used them to circle a whole hill. This hill became the center of Carthage. This clever trick helped her start a great new city.

An epic poem called the Aeneid tells her most famous story. Written by Virgil around 19 BC, it describes her life in detail.

We see Dido's influence in many places even today. Artists from the Renaissance to the 21st century have painted her.
