This city is one of the oldest places where people have lived without stopping. It was a major center for the Phoenician people a long time ago. Today, it is the capital of the Tyre District. It is also the fifth-largest city in Lebanon.

Because it is so special, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means the whole city is protected as a place of great importance.

Long ago, the city was not connected to the mainland. It was built on a rocky island. The name Tyre might come from a word meaning "rock."

The island was about 500 to 700 metres from the shore. In the past, the city had two different ports for ships. One was the Sidonian port in the north. The other was the Egyptian port in the south.

These harbors helped the people trade with many other lands.

History changed the shape of the city forever in 332 BCE. A leader named Alexander the Great wanted to take the city. To reach the island, he built a long path called a causeway. This path was about 750 metres long.

As years passed, sand and silt piled up on both sides of the path. This created a wide strip of land called an isthmus. This strip connected the island to the mainland permanently. Now, the modern city sits on both the old island and this new land.

Many interesting things can be found in Tyre today. There are many ancient ruins from different times, like the Roman and Byzantine periods.

You can even see the Tyre Hippodrome. In 2016, about 200,000 people lived in the urban area. The city is also home to three Palestinian refugee camps. These are called Burj El Shimali, El Buss, and Rashidieh.

The land around the city is very fertile for farming.

If you visit, you will find a warm and sunny place. The city gets about 300 days of sun every year.
