The Third Punic War was the final fight between two strong lands. These were Rome and Carthage. This war took place from 149 BC to 146 BC. It happened mostly in the area we now call northern Tunisia.

Long before this, the two sides had fought two other big wars. After the second war, a peace treaty was signed. This treaty said Carthage could not fight anyone without Rome's permission. However, a ruler named Masinissa of Numidia began taking land from Carthage. Rome did not stop him. This tension eventually led to a new conflict.

In 149 BC, Carthage decided to defend its land. They sent an army led by a general named Hasdrubal. They fought the Numidians at the Battle of Oroscopa. This battle was a disaster for Carthage, and their army surrendered.

This event gave Rome a reason to start a punitive expedition. A punitive expedition is a mission sent to punish someone. Rome sent a huge army to the North African port of Utica. The Carthaginians tried to make peace by giving up their weapons. They handed over 2,000 catapults and 200,000 sets of armour.

Even after they were disarmed, the Romans began to surround the city.

For a long time, the Roman army had a hard job. They tried to scale the walls of Carthage but failed. The Romans set up camps to watch the city. One camp was in a bad spot and made people sick.

A leader named Scipio Aemilianus helped the Romans during these hard times. He was a middle-ranking officer who showed great skill. He helped keep his troops disciplined. He also helped stop Carthaginian attacks on the Roman camps. Scipio became very popular with the Roman people. Because of this, they made him a consul to lead the war.

Scipio used smart ways to win the war. He built a large mole, which is a wall made of stone or earth, in the harbor. This blocked ships from bringing food to the city.

The Carthaginians tried to fight back with their ships. They lost many vessels during an indecisive battle. Then, the Romans built a large brick structure near the city walls. This allowed them to control the area better. Scipio led a strong force to attack the Carthaginian camp. This forced many nearby towns to surrender to Rome.

In early 146 BC, the Romans began their final assault. The fighting lasted for six days. The Romans destroyed the city of Carthage completely.

At the end, the Romans took 50,000 people as prisoners. These people were sold into slavery. After the war, the land became a Roman province called Africa. The capital of this new province was Utica. It took a hundred years before someone rebuilt Carthage as a Roman city. Historians today use old coins and ruins to learn about these events.
