Roman armies used large groups called legions. Most Roman soldiers were infantry who fought on foot. Some were heavy infantry with large shields and short swords. Others were light skirmishers who threw javelins. Carthage used a very different kind of army. They used many people from other lands. Many of these soldiers were from North Africa. They used heavy cavalry and even war elephants.

These different groups made the battles very complex.

A famous leader named Hannibal led the Carthaginian side.

He wanted to surprise the Romans in Italy. In 218 BC, he marched his army from Iberia. He went through Gaul and over the high Alps. This was a very hard journey for his men. Hannibal won big battles at Trebia and Lake Trasimene. He also won a massive victory at Cannae in 216 BC. At Cannae, he defeated the largest army Rome had ever built.

They needed many more men for their legions. Rome even asked slaves and criminals to join the army. This helped them grow their numbers very quickly. A new Roman leader named Publius Scipio took control in Iberia. In 209 BC, he captured the city of Carthago Nova. Scipio later moved the fight to Africa in 204 BC. This forced Hannibal to leave Italy to go home.

Scipio defeated Hannibal in this last fight. Carthage had to sign a peace treaty with Rome. This treaty was very tough on Carthage. They had to pay Rome 10,000 silver talents over 50 years. They also lost their lands far from Africa. Carthage could not fight wars without Rome's permission. This made Carthage much weaker than Rome. We know much of this from the historian Polybius. He wrote about these events in his work called The Histories.
