Hasdrubal Barca was a famous general from Carthage. He was the son of Hamilcar Barca. He also had two brothers named Hannibal and Mago. Hasdrubal lived during a time of great conflict. This was called the Second Punic War. He spent much of his life leading armies in a place called Iberia.

His job was to lead soldiers and protect Carthaginian lands. He commanded many different types of troops. These included infantry, which are soldiers who walk, and cavalry, which are soldiers on horses. He even led war elephants. In 218 BC, Hannibal left a large force in Iberia. This force had 13,000 infantry and 2,550 cavalry. Hasdrubal was chosen to lead these men. He wanted to help his brother by marching to Italy.

Hasdrubal's life was full of hard battles. He fought against two Roman leaders named Gnaeus and Publius Cornelius Scipio. In 217 BC, he tried to fight the Romans near the Ebro River. He had a fleet of ships to help his army. However, the Romans surprised his ships and won a battle. This loss was very difficult for him. He also had to deal with local tribes that rebelled against him. He spent much of 216 BC fighting these rebels near Gades.

There were many important moments in his career. In 215 BC, he fought a big battle at Ibera. He used his many horses to try and win. Sadly, the Romans broke through his lines and won. Later, in 212 BC, Hasdrubal had a great victory. He won the Battle of the Upper Baetis. This battle destroyed a large part of the Roman army. He even defeated both Scipio brothers in this fight. This helped him take control of more land near the Ebro River.

Hasdrubal's story ended during his attempt to reach his brother. In 208 BC, he left Iberia to go to Italy. He crossed the high Pyrenees mountains in the winter. In 207 BC, he moved through the Alps. He brought his war elephants with him across the mountains. He wanted to meet Hannibal in a place called South Umbria. But the Romans stopped him at the Battle of the Metaurus. Hasdrubal died in this battle. His defeat meant Hannibal could not get the help he needed. This changed the course of the whole war.
