The Battle of Ilipa was a very important fight in history. It happened in 206 BC during the Second Punic War. A Roman leader named Scipio Africanus led his troops in this battle. He fought against two leaders from Carthage named Hasdrubal and Mago. This battle took place near a village called Esquivel in Spain. Many people think this was Scipio's most brilliant victory. It helped Rome take control of the land in Iberia.

This win stopped Carthage from sending more soldiers or silver to Italy.

Before the big battle, the two sides faced each other for many days. Each day, both armies lined up in the same way. Scipio put his Roman soldiers in the center. He put his Iberian allies on the sides. The Carthaginians did the same thing to match him. They put their best African soldiers in the middle. They also had elephants at the front of their cavalry. This pattern stayed the same for several days in a row.

Scipio decided to use a clever plan to surprise his enemies. He prepared his troops in secret during the night. At dawn, his cavalry and light soldiers attacked the enemy camp. Many Carthaginian soldiers were still asleep and were not ready. They were in complete disorder when the fight began. Scipio also changed his formation for the actual battle. He moved his Roman soldiers to the sides. He put his Iberian allies in the center instead.

The battle was very intense for both sides. The Roman soldiers fought the Carthaginian soldiers on the sides. At the same time, the Velites used trumpets and javelins. These loud noises and weapons scared the Carthaginian elephants. The elephants became wild and trampled the enemy cavalry. The Carthaginian center could not help their friends on the sides. If they moved, their own middle would be left open to attack. This caused the Carthaginian army to lose hope and flee.

After the main fight, the Carthaginian army was mostly defeated. Hasdrubal tried to lead his remaining men away in the dark. Scipio ordered his army to chase them immediately. Hasdrubal was left with only 6,000 men. They fled to a mountain top without any water. Eventually, they had to surrender. Hasdrubal and Mago managed to escape to other places. Scipio later returned to Rome and became a consul in 205 BC.
