He lived during a time of great wars. His family was very important in the city of Rome. Many of his relatives had been high leaders called consuls. His father and uncle also led Roman armies. Scipio grew up in this world of powerful families. He learned about leadership from a very young age.

Scipio first became a leader during the Second Punic War. This was a long war between Rome and Carthage. In 210 BC, the Roman assembly chose him to lead in Spain. This was very unusual for him. He had never held a high office before this time. He arrived in Spain with 10,000 soldiers to help.

He worked hard to win back Roman lands. He captured the important city of Qart-Hadast in 209 BC. He even told his men that a god promised them help. This helped make him seem like a legendary hero.

Scipio won many battles against the Carthaginian armies in Spain. One major victory happened at the Battle of Ilipa in 206 BC. This battle was fought near the city of Seville. After this win, the Carthaginians had to leave the area. Scipio also helped start a new town called Italica. This town later became the birthplace of some famous Roman emperors.

He was very successful at making new allies. He gave gifts to Spanish hostages to show he was fair. This helped more tribes join the side of Rome.

Next, Scipio moved the fight to Africa to face Carthage directly. He was elected consul in 205 BC at age 31. He gathered his own army of 7,000 volunteers.

He led his ships and men across the sea. In a famous fight at the Battle of Zama, he defeated Hannibal. Hannibal was a very great general from Carthage. Because Scipio won in Africa, people gave him a new name. They called him Africanus to honor his big victory.

Even though he was a hero, life in Rome was hard. Some people did not like him at all. A man named Cato the Elder was a strong opponent. In 187 BC, Scipio and his brother faced a trial. People accused them of taking bribes from a king named Antiochus III. Scipio felt sad because his own people were not kind. He decided to leave the busy life of Rome. He retired to a quiet home at his villa in Liternum.
