Scipio made a clever plan to surprise them. He changed his battle formation overnight. He moved his best Roman soldiers to the sides. He put his allies in the middle. At dawn, his troops attacked. The Carthaginian soldiers were not ready. Many were still asleep. The Roman soldiers won the fight. The Roman troops also used loud trumpets. This scared the enemy elephants. The elephants ran wild and caused chaos. The Carthaginian army lost its power in Spain. Hasdrubal and Mago escaped to stay safe. Scipio then went back to Rome. He became a top leader there.
