The First Punic War was a huge struggle between two great powers. These powers were Rome and Carthage. They fought for control of the western Mediterranean sea. This conflict lasted for 23 years from 264 BC to 241 BC. It was the longest continuous war of its time. Most of the fighting happened on the island of Sicily.

Much of the fighting also took place on the water. This was one of the largest naval wars in ancient history.

Fighting at sea required many special ships and tools. The Romans had to build a massive navy to face Carthage. Carthage already had a very strong fleet of ships. To help their soldiers fight on boats, the Romans used a tool called a corvus.

The corvus was a boarding bridge. It allowed Roman soldiers to cross onto enemy ships during a battle. This changed how sea battles were fought. It helped the Roman army use their skills on the water.

This long war began because of a city called Messana. In 264 BC, the Romans landed on the island of Sicily. They wanted to help a group of soldiers in Messana. This decision led to a long fight with Carthage. The war moved between the land and the sea.

Both sides suffered heavy losses during these years. Many ships were lost to enemy attacks. Other ships were lost to very large storms at sea.

Many battles and dates define this era. One of the biggest sea battles was at Cape Ecnomus. Another huge event was the Battle of the Aegates Islands in 241 BC.

During the war, a terrible storm killed over 100,000 Roman men. Rome had to rebuild its fleet many times. They even built 220 new ships very quickly.

Archaeologists have even found bronze ship rams from these battles in the sea today.

Carthage had to sign a treaty and pay large amounts of money. Rome also took over the land in Sicily. This victory made Rome the leading military power in the area. Their work building 1,000 ships helped them rule the seas for 600 years. This war changed the map of the world forever. It also set the stage for the Second Punic War later on.
