These groups were Rome and Carthage. They fought the First Punic War for 23 years. Most of the fighting happened on the island of Sicily. Much of the war also took place at sea.

The war began in 264 BC. Rome sent soldiers to the city of Messana. Carthage was already a strong power at sea. To fight them, Rome built a large navy. They used a new tool called a corvus.
