Long ago, two great powers fought for control.
The war began in 264 BC. Rome sent soldiers to the city of Messana. Carthage was already a strong power at sea. To fight them, Rome built a large navy. They used a new tool called a corvus.

The First Punic War was a huge struggle between two great powers. These powers were Rome and Carthage. They fought for control of the western Mediterranean sea. This conflict lasted for 23 years from 264 BC to 241 BC. It was the longest continuous war of its time. Most of the fighting happened on the island of Sicily.
Fighting at sea required many special ships and tools. The Romans had to build a massive navy to face Carthage. Carthage already had a very strong fleet of ships. To help their soldiers fight on boats, the Romans used a tool called a corvus.
This long war began because of a city called Messana. In 264 BC, the Romans landed on the island of Sicily. They wanted to help a group of soldiers in Messana. This decision led to a long fight with Carthage. The war moved between the land and the sea.
Many battles and dates define this era. One of the biggest sea battles was at Cape Ecnomus. Another huge event was the Battle of the Aegates Islands in 241 BC.
Rome eventually won the war through great effort.
The First Punic War was a massive struggle for power in the ancient world. It lasted for 23 years, from 264 BC to 241 BC. This conflict was fought between Rome and Carthage. These were the two strongest powers in the western Mediterranean Sea. The war was the longest continuous conflict of its time. It was also one of the greatest naval wars in history.
Most of the fighting took place on the island of Sicily. Battles also occurred in the surrounding waters and in North Africa. The war began because of a dispute in the city of Messana. A group of soldiers called the Mamertines had occupied the city. They asked both Rome and Carthage for help. The Carthaginians moved in first to protect their interests. However, the Roman popular assembly decided to intervene in 264 BC. They hoped to gain strategic advantages and wealth from the conflict.
Rome was primarily a land power with a strong army. Roman citizens served as infantry, or foot soldiers. They used heavy shields, body armor, and short swords. To fight at sea, the Romans had to build a massive navy. They used a special tool called a corvus to win battles. A corvus was a boarding bridge used on ships.
Conflict moved through many different stages and locations. The Romans first landed in Sicily and besieged the city of Syracuse. They also attacked the Carthaginian base at Akragas in 262 BC. The Carthaginians were defeated at the Battle of Cape Ecnomus. This was possibly the largest naval battle in history based on the number of combatants. Later, the Romans attempted to invade North Africa. This led to a series of intense battles and heavy losses. The war eventually turned into a long stalemate where neither side could win easily.
Nature also played a role in the destruction of both armies. During the war, the Roman fleet was devastated by a massive storm. This disaster caused the loss of most ships and over 100,000 men. The Romans had to rebuild their fleets many times. In one instance, they rapidly added 220 new ships. In another year, they lost 150 ships to a storm. These numbers show how much effort and life was spent on the conflict.
The war finally ended after the Battle of the Aegates Islands in 241 BC. Carthage could not relieve its troops on Sicily and had to negotiate. A treaty was signed that changed the Mediterranean forever. Carthage was forced to pay large reparations, which are payments made to settle a debt. Rome also annexed Sicily, meaning they took control of the island as a province.
Historians learn about this war mostly from one man named Polybius. He was a Greek historian who lived about a century after the war ended. He was known for being an analytical and objective writer. He often interviewed people who had participated in the events. While some of his details are debated, most modern historians trust his work. Archaeologists have even found bronze ship rams in the sea near Sicily. These artifacts help prove that Polybius's descriptions of the battles were accurate.
The First Punic War had lasting consequences for the future. It left a major rivalry between Rome and Carthage unresolved. This competition eventually led to the Second Punic War in 218 BC. The war also showed how much a state could change through military effort. Rome built roughly 1,000 galleys throughout the conflict. This massive shipbuilding project laid the foundation for their future empire. The war reshaped the politics and borders of the ancient world.
