The Neo-Assyrian Empire was a huge and powerful land. It was the fourth stage of Assyrian history. This era began in 911 BC with King Adad-nirari II.

The empire grew to rule much of the ancient Near East. It reached parts of North Africa and the Mediterranean too. Some people call it the first world empire. It was the largest empire in history up to that time.

To rule such a big area, the Assyrians used new ideas. They built a great system to send messages. They used well-maintained roads and relay stations for this. This helped official messages travel very fast across the land. No one in the Middle East could beat this speed until the 1800s. They also used a policy to move people to new places. This helped spread Assyrian farming ways to different provinces.

Many kings worked to make the empire grow. Early kings wanted to take back lands they had lost. Ashurnasirpal II ruled from 883 to 859 BC. He moved the capital city to a place called Kalhu.

His successor, Shalmaneser III, made the empire even bigger. Later, Tiglath-Pileser III took control in 745 BC. He doubled the size of the empire through many conquests.

Then, King Esarhaddon ruled from 681 to 669 BC. He led the conquest of Egypt to expand the borders. The military was very strong during this peak time. They used cavalry and new ways to attack city walls.

Even a great empire can come to an end. The Neo-Assyrian Empire fell quickly in the late 7th century BC. A group from Babylon rose up against them. At the same time, the Medes joined an invasion.

This sudden fall changed the history of the region forever. The empire left behind many ideas for later leaders. Their ways of ruling helped shape future empires like the Persians. Even religious stories in the Bible were affected by them.
