It started as a single city-state. Over many centuries, it grew into a huge empire. This empire was very powerful in the ancient Near East. The Assyrians were known for their strong army. They also used clever ways to rule the lands they conquered.

Their history spans from the early Bronze Age to the late Iron Age.

Assyria changed many times through different historical periods. First, it was an Early Assyrian city-state. Later, it became the Old Assyrian state. The Middle Assyrian Empire rose next. Then came the famous Neo-Assyrian period.

Historians use these periods to study changes in language and politics. Each stage shows how the land and its people changed. This helped them grow from a small city into a large regional power.

Assur was the very first capital city of Assyria.

It was founded around 2600 BC. For a long time, other groups ruled the city. In 2025 BC, the city became independent. A leader named Puzur-Ashur I began to rule there.

The people of Assur were excellent at trading goods. They even tried the first known experiment with free trade. This helped them build a massive trade network across many lands.

At its peak, the Neo-Assyrian Empire was incredibly strong.

Their military was the most powerful in the world. The empire stretched from parts of modern Iran to Egypt. This was the largest empire assembled in world history at that time.

However, the empire fell in the late 7th century BC. A group of Babylonians and Medes worked together to conquer them. This ended their time as a dominant world power.

Even after the empire fell, Assyrian culture lived on for a long time. Their ways of governing helped many empires that came after them.

Their stories and traditions left a mark on Greek and Roman history. The name "Assyria" actually comes from the Greek word for the region. Many people in the area still live in northern Mesopotamia today. Some of these people became Christians starting in the 1st century AD. The legacy of Assyria remains a key part of human history.
