His name means "Nabu, protect the son." He was the founder of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. This empire rose after a long time of being ruled by others. He became the king of Babylon in 626 BC. He ruled until he died in 605 BC. His life changed the map of the ancient world forever.

For over a hundred years, the Assyrian Empire ruled over Babylonia. The Assyrians had a very large and organized army. They were a strong land that controlled much of the Near East. Nabopolassar decided to revolt against the Assyrian king, Sinsharishkun. This was a very difficult task for him. He fought for nearly ten years to win independence. Eventually, he managed to push the Assyrians out of his land.

Nabopolassar had a mysterious beginning. He called himself a "son of a nobody" in his own writings. Some historians think he came from a powerful family in Uruk. Uruk was a city located south of Babylon. He might have been part of the ruling group there. This connection to the south might explain his early power.

The war changed as other groups joined in. A group called the Medes helped Nabopolassar fight. The Medes attacked the city of Assur in 614 BC. In 612 BC, the Medes and Babylonians attacked Nineveh. Nineveh was the capital city of the Assyrian Empire. This helped the Neo-Babylonian Empire grow much stronger.

Other lands tried to stop the new empire from rising. Egypt wanted to help the Assyrians stay in power. Pharaoh Necho II fought against Nabopolassar for several years. This conflict ended at the Battle of Carchemish in 605 BC. Nabopolassar won this big fight. After he died that same year, his son Nebuchadnezzar II became king. People remembered Nabopolassar as a hero for many centuries.
