He started the Neo-Babylonian Empire. His name means "Nabu, protect the son."

For over a hundred years, the Assyrian Empire ruled Babylon. Nabopolassar led a revolt to make Babylonia free. This was a hard fight. It lasted nearly ten years.

He fought the Assyrian king, Sinsharishkun. Eventually, Nabopolassar pushed the Assyrians out.

A group called the Medes helped him. They fought the Assyrians too. They attacked the city of Assur. They also attacked the capital city, Nineveh.

This helped the Neo-Babylonian Empire grow.

Egypt tried to stop him. They wanted to help the Assyrians. But Nabopolassar won a big battle at Carchemish. He ruled until he died in 605 BC. His son, Nebuchadnezzar II, became the next king. People remembered Nabopolassar for a very long time.
