Before him, a different group ruled for twenty-three years. Nabonassar took the throne from a leader named Nabu-shuma-ishkun. This brought local rule back to Babylon.

Nabonassar is famous for how he kept records. He helped start a new way to track time. He made changes to the Babylonian calendar. He also tracked the stars and planets. People say he gathered old records to start a new history. Some say he even destroyed old notes to make his reign the new start.

His time as king was not always easy. A strong leader from Assyria named Tiglath-Pileser III invaded. This leader fought many tribes in the area. Even with these wars, Nabonassar's rule became stable.

Business seemed to grow during his reign. We have many clay tablets that show people farming and weaving. These tablets show a recovery in trade. Nabonassar died in his palace during his fourteenth year. His son, Nabû-nādin-zēri, became the next king. This was a rare moment when a son followed his father.
