He took the throne from a leader named Nabu-shuma-ishkun. This ended twenty-three years of rule by the Chaldean people. Nabonassar was likely a native person from Mesopotamia. His rule brought local leaders back to power in Babylon. This was a big change for the people living there. His reign is seen as a new era in history.

One of the most important things Nabonassar did was change how people kept records. He helped reform the Babylonian calendar by adding regular months. This helped people track time much more accurately. He also began recording the movements of stars and planets. A writer named Berossus said Nabonassar gathered old records to start a new history. Some say he even destroyed old notes to make his own time the new start. This made his reign a key point for future historians.

History tells us about many leaders who lived at the same time as Nabonassar. He lived during the time of Assyrian kings like Ashur-nirari V and Tiglath-Pileser III. He was also a contemporary of Elamite kings like Humban-Tahrah I and Humban-Nikaš I. During his reign, Nabonassar became a vassal to the Assyrian king Tiglath-Pileser III. This means he had to follow the rules of the stronger Assyrian empire. Even so, he managed to keep his own kingdom running.

Life was not always peaceful for the kingdom of Babylon. In 745 BC, the Assyrian general Tiglath-Pileser III led a large invasion. The Assyrian forces attacked places like Rabbilu and Hamranu. They also fought against many different tribes in the region. These wars were very difficult for the land. However, these actions helped stabilize Nabonassar's rule in the end. He was even able to stop a revolt in the city of Borsippa.

Even with wars, business and trade seemed to grow during his time. We have found twenty-three clay tablets that talk about daily life. These tablets mention things like farming, weaving, and selling goods. They show that the economy was starting to recover. Nabonassar died in his palace during his fourteenth year of rule. His son, Nabû-nādin-zēri, became the next king. This was a rare moment where a son followed his father in Babylon.
