His name means "Ashur is the creator of the heir." He was the son of King Esarhaddon. His father chose him to be the main heir in 673 BC. This choice was very important for the future of the empire.

Because he was chosen, he became the last great king of Assyria.

Becoming king was not a simple task for Ashurbanipal. His father divided the rule between two brothers to prevent fighting. Ashurbanipal became the king of Assyria. His older brother, Shamash-shum-ukin, became the king of Babylon.

This arrangement was meant to keep the peace. However, the two brothers did not always agree. Ashurbanipal eventually took more control over his brother's lands. This led to a large war between the two siblings.

Ashurbanipal spent many years leading his armies in battle. He fought to keep control over Egypt after his father's conquest.

He also fought against a group called the Elamites. These wars were often very difficult and violent. He fought the Elamites in 665, 653, and again in 647 BC.

His rule was marked by both great victories and many hard struggles. Some of his wars cost the empire a lot of time and money.

Even though he was a warrior, he was also a great lover of books. He used his wealth to build the Library of Ashurbanipal in Nineveh.

This library was a massive collection of many different kinds of writings. At its peak, it held over 100,000 different texts. It was one of the largest libraries in the ancient world. It was not beaten until the Library of Alexandria was built centuries later.

Today, we still study many of these ancient documents.

We know much about Ashurbanipal through the items he left behind. More than 30,000 cuneiform texts have survived from his library. Cuneiform is a way of writing using small wedge shapes. These texts teach us about ancient science, religion, and language.
