He worked hard to make his empire much larger and stronger.

Sargon was a skilled warrior and a smart leader of armies. He did not just watch from far away. He personally led his soldiers into many different battles.

During his reign, he fought to win back lands like Babylonia. He also worked to make the northern kingdom of Urartu weaker. Sargon used many new rules to help run his large empire. By the end of his time as king, his rivals were all defeated. He made sure his control over the Levant was very stable.

Sargon's rise to power is a bit of a mystery. He was likely the son of a king named Tiglath-Pileser III.

Most historians believe he took the throne from Shalmaneser V. Some think he may have even killed him to become king. This would make him a usurper, or someone who takes power. Sargon said the god Ashur called him to be the leader. He started a new family line of kings called the Sargonid dynasty.

Sargon did many things to help his empire grow together. He moved people from different places to live in new lands.

He claimed to have moved 27,280 Israelites to new areas. He tried to give foreign people the same rights as Assyrians. Sargon also gave more importance to women and scribes at his court. Between 717 and 707 BC, he built a brand new capital city. He named this huge city Dur-Sharrukin, which means "Fort Sargon."

Sargon's life ended during a final battle in 705 BC. He was fighting a group called Tabal in a place called Anatolia.

His army could not find his body after the fight. This was very bad for the Assyrian people and their beliefs. His son, Sennacherib, was very upset by his father's death. Because of this, people forgot about Sargon for a very long time. Archaeologists finally found the ruins of his city in the 1800s. Now, we know he was one of the most important kings in history.
