Dur-Sharrukin was a grand capital city for the Assyrian Empire. Its name means "Fortress of Sargon." It was located in what is now the village of Khorsabad in northern Iraq. This city was a place of great power and beauty. It was built to show the strength of the Assyrian kings.

The city was built with a very careful plan. It was shaped like a large rectangle. The walls were thick and had 157 towers to protect the people inside. There were seven large gates for entering the city. Inside the walls, there were many temples for different gods. One special temple was a ziggurat with a winding ramp.

King Sargon II began this huge project many years ago. He ruled from 722 to 705 BC. The city was built mostly in the ten years before 706 BC. Sargon brought in many workers and materials from far away. He even brought craftsmen from coastal Phoenicia. He even moved thousands of fruit trees to create a beautiful garden.

Sargon II wanted his city to be a masterpiece. He built a royal hunting park and a huge garden. This garden had many types of trees like apples and almonds. He even built a man-made mound to look like mountains. At the palace entrance, huge statues called Lamassu stood guard. These were winged bulls with human heads that weighed 40 tons.

The city's story changed when Sargon II died in a battle in 705 BC. His son, Sennacherib, decided to move the capital to Nineveh. Because of this, Dur-Sharrukin was never completely finished. It was later abandoned when the Assyrian empire fell. Many years later, a man named Paul-Émile Botta rediscovered the ruins. He found many beautiful stone carvings that tell us about the past.
