The city grew even more under the leader al-Mutawakkil. He built the Great Mosque of Samarra with its famous spiral minaret.

Samarra has roots that go back a very long time. Long before the Abbasid period, there was a prehistoric Samarra culture. This culture lasted from 5,500 BCE until 3,900 BCE.

Later, the city was linked to the Neo-Assyrian period. A site called Sur-marrati may have been a fortified Assyrian place. Many different names for the city appear in old records. Greek and Latin writers had their own names for it. It was even described as a village in Syriac texts.

Today, Samarra is a very important religious site. It is home to the al-Askari Shrine.
