Many people call Fallujah the "city of mosques." This is because there are over 200 mosques in the city and nearby villages. The name of the city might come from a very old word. It may come from the Syriac word Pallgutha. This word relates to a canal regulator. The city sits where the Euphrates River once divided into a canal.

People have lived in this region for thousands of years. There is evidence of life here during Babylonian times. In the past, the area was near a Persian town called Anbar. The word anbar means "warehouse" in Persian. The region was also a very important place for Jewish learning. A famous academy called Pumbedita was located here for many centuries.

Fallujah has changed a lot over the years. In 1947, it was a small town with 10,000 people. As oil wealth grew in Iraq, the city grew much faster. By 2018, the population reached about 250,900 people. The city became very industrial with many large factories. However, new highways built around the city changed its importance.

The city has also seen very difficult times. During the Iraq War, there was heavy fighting in the streets. These battles caused great damage to many homes and buildings.

In 2014, a group called the Islamic State captured the city. This caused many people to leave. Later, the Iraqi government began a military offensive to take it back. By June 26, 2016, the city was free from their control.
