Long ago, Nineveh was once the largest city in the entire world. Some people believe the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon were actually located here. The area was part of the Assyrian Empire for a very long time. An early settlement was even mentioned by Xenophon in 401 BC. This shows how people have lived in this area for thousands of years.

In the past, Mosul was famous for its special crafts. During the 13th century, the city had a great industry for making brass items.

Craftsmen would decorate these luxury vessels by inlaying them with silver. These beautiful pieces were very expensive to make. They were often sent to powerful rulers as gifts. The city also had an iron industry in the late 10th century. Today, the region is also known for its rich oil reserves and marble.

Today, Mosul is a place of learning and modern life. It is home to the University of Mosul.
