Duhok

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Duhok is a busy city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It serves as the capital of the Duhok Governorate. The name of the city has a very interesting story. It comes from the Kurdish words "du" and "hok." These words mean "two lumps." Long ago, travelers carrying wheat or barley paid a tax. They gave two lumps of grain from their baskets to pass through.

The city has a very long and changing history. One tradition says it was once called Duhok-e Dasinya. This name means "Duhok of the Yezidis." Later, many different groups settled there. These groups included Muslims, Christians, and Jews. In the 1400s, Persian writings mentioned the city during military campaigns. By 1820, it was a small town with only 300 houses. By 1929, the population grew to about 3,500 people.

Many different kinds of people live in Duhok today. Most of the people are Kurds. You will also find Assyrians, Yazidis, Armenians, and Arabs. The city is also a place of help for others. It hosts many refugees from Syria. It also holds people who had to flee their homes in Iraq. As of March 2024, 40% of the displaced people in the Kurdistan Region live in the Duhok Governorate.

There are amazing old things to find near the city. Seven kilometers southwest is the Halamata Cave. This site has stone carvings called the Maltai Reliefs. These were made for the Assyrian king Sennacherib a long time ago. He built a canal system to bring water to Nineveh. In the Balyuz hills, researchers found a different treasure. They found an ancient tablet with Greek writing from 165 BC. This tablet mentions a ruler named Demetrius.

The weather in Duhok follows a specific pattern. The summers are very hot and sweltering. It almost never rains during these months. The winters are much different. They are cool or cold and bring plenty of rain. Most of the rain falls in late winter or early spring. You might see snow for two or three days each year. In the higher hills, the snow can fall much harder.
