This city has a very long history. A writer named Yaqut Homavi wrote about it in the 13th century. He called Birjand the most beautiful town in the Qohestan region. Long ago, it was likely a small rural community. You can still see very old history on rocks nearby. In the village of Kooch, there is an ancient inscription called Lakh-Mazar. This rock has many carvings and different types of writing on it.
