Because it is so special, UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site in 2017. The name Yazd means "pure" or "holy." It is a place where many people live together in a traditional way. In 2016, more than 529,000 people lived in the city.

Living in a hot desert requires clever ideas. Yazd is famous for its Persian architecture. Many buildings are made of adobe, which is a type of dried clay. To stay cool, the city uses amazing wind towers. These towers catch the breeze to move air through homes.

The city also has qanats, which are underground channels for water. People even used yakhchals to store ice from nearby mountains. These clever tools help people thrive in the blazing summer sun.

History has shaped Yazd for a very long time. Archaeologists found evidence of people living nearby during the Achaemenid Empire. This was a time between 550 BC and 330 BC. Some scholars think the name Yazd comes from an old name called Issatis. During the Sasanian Empire, the city became even more important. A mint was even set up there to make coins.

In the 1400s, a book called the "History of Yazd" was written. This shows how much the city has grown over many centuries.

Religion and culture are very important in this city. Most people in Yazd are Shia Muslims. However, there is also a community of Zoroastrians living there. One fire temple has kept a flame burning since the year 470 AD.

Today, Yazd is a busy place for making things. It is a center for textiles like silk and cotton. The city is also famous for its delicious sweets. People love treats like baklava, ghotab, and pashmak.
