It serves as the capital of the Dhi Qar Governorate. The city sits on the lower part of the Euphrates River. It is found south-southeast of Baghdad. Nearby, you can find the ruins of the ancient city of Ur. The Euphrates River even merges with the Tigris River about 10 kilometres from the city. In 2018, about 558,000 people lived in Nasiriyah. This makes it the ninth-largest city in all of Iraq.

The city has a very specific look because of its history. In 1872, a Belgian architect named Jules Tilly designed a modern plan for the city. He used a grid layout with long, straight streets. These streets cross each other at right angles. This design helped the city grow in an orderly way. Tilly also included wide sidewalks and public gardens. These green spaces became popular places for people to rest.

Nasiriyah was founded in the late 19th century. It was started by the Muntafiq tribe during the Ottoman era. A leader named Nasir al-Sadoon Pasha founded the city in 1872. He was the chief of the Muntafiq tribal group. The city was named after him. In the early years, the town had about 600 stone houses. Most other buildings were made from mud brick. The area was also full of grain fields and date palms.

Life in Nasiriyah involves many different jobs and activities. The city is a major center for transportation and trade. It is a famous place for growing dates. Local workers also have special skills in carpentry and silver working. Some people even build boats there. The city museum holds many old items. These artifacts come from the Sumerian, Assyrian, Babylonian, and Abbasid times.
