It sits on the left bank of the Tigris River. The city is the capital of the Wasit Governorate. You can find it southeast of Baghdad. The old part of the town sits inside a sharp U-shaped bend in the river. This bend is so deep that the town almost looks like an island.

The land around the city is very good for farming. Many farmers grow cereal grains in this fertile area. For hundreds of years, Kut has been a famous center for the carpet trade.

The city uses the river to help its people and farms. In the 1930s, workers built the Kut Barrage. A barrage is a structure used to control water. This barrage keeps the water level high in the Tigris River. This helps water flow into the Gharraf irrigation canal. The barrage also supports a road for travelers. It includes a special lock so boats can pass up and down the river. In 2005, workers spent 3 million US dollars to repair the barrage and the regulator.

Kut has a very long and ancient history. Long ago, a city called Madharaya stood on this same site. Madharaya was the home of a religious leader named Mazdak. This leader lived during the Sasanian era. By the early 1200s, a writer named Yaqut al-Hamawi said the city was in ruins. Later, the city grew again. In the 19th century, steamboats began to travel the Tigris. This new way of moving goods helped Kut become prosperous once more.

The city also saw very difficult times during World War I. In 1915, British forces marched north from Basra to reach Kut. They fought against Ottoman forces for control of the area. In December 1915, a long siege began. Turkish forces under Colonel Nureddin Pasha trapped the British troops. The siege lasted for 147 days. Many soldiers died during the attempts to help the trapped troops. Finally, Major General Charles Townshend surrendered on April 29, 1916.

British forces later retook the city in 1917.

In modern times, Kut has seen many changes. The population is estimated to be about 389,400 people. Near the city, there is a site called the Baghdad Nuclear Research Facility. In the early 21st century, a large military base called COB Delta was nearby.

This base was located on the site of an old Iraqi Air Force base. Many different countries helped man the base, including Poland and the United States. The base finally closed on October 24, 2011. It was handed over to the Iraqi Air Force that same day.
