The city was founded in 638 CE. This happened during the time of the second Rashidun Caliph, Umar ibn Al-Khattab. It started as a military base and an administrative center. Saʻd ibn Abī Waqqas helped found it as an encampment. The city was originally built with a circular plan. This design used a style called Partho-Sasanian architecture. It was one of two major garrison cities in Iraq.

Kufa has a very long and busy history. It served as the capital for the last Rashidun Caliph, Ali ibn Abi Talib. Later, it became the first capital for the Abbasid Caliphate. The city saw many different rulers over the years. Some leaders faced rebellions from the people living there. In 749, the Abbasids took the city and used it as their seat of power. They eventually moved their capital to Baghdad in 762.

Many smart people lived and worked in Kufa. It was a famous center for Islamic law and study. The city was home to many great scholars and jurists. For example, the famous Abu Hanifa was a Kufan. The city also helped develop the Kufic script. This is an early, angular way of writing the Arabic language. This writing style came from an older script called al-Hiri.

Today, Kufa remains a special place for many visitors. People travel there to visit the Great Mosque of Kufa. This mosque holds many sites that are sacred to Shia Muslims. It is also a place where people enjoy sports. The city is home to a football team called Al-Kufa SC. This team plays in the Iraqi Premier Division League. Long ago, Kufan coins even traveled as far as Russia through trade. This shows how much the world once connected to this city.
