The city has a hot desert climate. This means the summers are very hot and the winters are mild. In 2024, about 1.41 million people lived in this area. Najaf is a very important place for Shia Muslims. It is considered one of the holiest cities in the world. It is the third holiest site in Islam, following only Mecca and Medina. Many people travel there for pilgrimage to visit the Imam Ali Mosque.

The city is famous for several special places. The Imam Ali Mosque has a grand structure with a gold dome. Nearby is the Wadi-us-Salaam cemetery. This is the largest cemetery in the whole world. Many people want to be buried there to be near the prophets. Najaf is also a center for learning and religion. It is home to the Hawza of Najaf. This is the oldest Shia seminary, or school, in the world. In 2014, it had about 13,000 students. Many important religious leaders have studied there.

History tells us that the city grew around a sacred site. Legend says that Ali ibn Abi Talib was buried there in secret. Many years later, the Abbasid Caliph Harun al-Rashid found the spot. He built a shrine to honor Ali at that place. This building helped the town of Najaf grow over time. The city was founded as a shrine in 791 AD. Long ago, the area was also near the ancient city of Babylon. It sits 30 km south of Babylon and 400 km north of Ur.

Najaf has a very diverse history with many different people. Archaeologists have found evidence of people living there since the 1st century BC. Excavations have found Christian graves with crosses and stones. They also found Hebrew writings and evidence of a glass industry. This shows that different religious groups lived together in the past. The area was once called Baniqia. Some texts say that Abraham once visited this village. The city has also faced hard times, like when the Euphrates river changed course. This caused water shortages and destroyed many palm groves.

Today, Najaf is a busy and modern city. It has an airport to welcome visitors from far away.

In 2012, it was named the Cultural Centre of the Arab World. The city has seen many changes through modern wars and new governments. In 2021, Pope Francis visited the city to talk about peace. He met with religious leaders to discuss living together in harmony. This visit showed how the city connects different faiths today. Najaf remains a place where history and modern life meet.
