The geography of the oasis makes it a very special place. It sits 4,500 feet above sea level. The highest point in the oasis is 2,000 feet tall. This means it reaches 6,500 feet above sea level. The ground has a layer of sandstone over rocks like basalt and granite. This sandstone belt makes it easier for people to move through the area. In a dry land, the oasis has rich soil and lots of water. It is a necessary path for anyone traveling to Yemen.

In ancient times, Najran was a major center for many things. It was a busy place for farming and making goods. People made items from cloth and leather there. It was also a huge center for trading incense. The city sat where two main trade paths met. One path went from Hadhramaut to the Eastern Mediterranean. Another path went through Al-Yamama and into Mesopotamia. This made Najran a very important hub for travelers.

The history of the city is very long and complex. In the early 1st millennium BC, different groups controlled the area. Later, the Sabaean king Karib'il Watar conquered these groups. The Roman Empire also briefly took control in 24 BC. A leader named Aelius Gallus led this siege. During the second and third centuries, many different kingdoms ruled Najran. This included the Himyarite Kingdom and the Kingdom of Aksum. The city was sometimes called Ẓirbān during this time.

Religion played a big part in the city's past. Christianity arrived in Najran around the fifth century. It likely came through the busy trade routes. The city became a central place for Christians in South Arabia. However, this led to difficult times for the community. A king named Dhu Nuwas attacked the Christians. He led a siege that lasted thirteen months. He broke a promise to keep the people safe. This resulted in a massacre where 12,500 people were killed.
