Duhok is a city in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It is the capital of the Duhok Governorate. The city has a very old history. One story says its name comes from Kurdish words. These words mean "two lumps." This refers to a tax paid by travelers. They gave two lumps of wheat or barley to pass by.

Many different groups of people live in Duhok. Most people are Kurds. There are also Assyrians, Yazidis, Armenians, and Arabs. The city also helps many people who had to flee their homes. Many refugees from Syria live there now.

There are amazing things to see near the city. Seven kilometers away is Halamata Cave. It has old stone carvings called reliefs. These were made for an Assyrian king long ago. In the Balyuz hills, researchers found an ancient tablet. It has Greek writing on it from a long time ago.

The weather in Duhok changes with the seasons. Summers are very hot and almost never have rain. Winters are cool or cold and bring much rain. You might see snow for two or three days each year. Most rain falls in late winter or early spring.
