geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

São Tomé is a large city. It is the capital of a country called São Tomé and Príncipe. This country sits in Central Africa. The city is on São Tomé Island. It sits by Ana Chaves Bay in the northeast. A small island called Ilhéu das Cabras is near the coast.

The weather is warm all year. It has a wet season from October to May. The city can be very cloudy and foggy. This happens because of a cold ocean current.

Many old things are in the city. There is a large cathedral. There is also Fort São Sebastião. This fort is now a museum. Long ago, people grew lots of sugar here. The Portuguese came to the island in the 1400s.

Today, the city is a busy place. It has a big airport. Planes fly to many African countries and to Portugal. You can find many schools and hospitals here. The city is also known for tchiloli playing. This is a special kind of performance. The city has many squares and markets too.
