This river starts high up in the Taurus Mountains in eastern Turkey. From there, it flows south through dry deserts. It travels through parts of Turkey and Syria. Eventually, it moves through Iraq and meets the Euphrates river. Together, these two rivers flow into the Persian Gulf.

The river moves in a very specific way. It flows from the mountains through the Syrian and Arabian Deserts. Along its path, several smaller rivers join it. These are called affluences, like the Great Zab and the Little Zab. Near the end of its journey, the Tigris splits into different channels. Some paths go to the Central Marshes or the Hawizeh Marshes. Finally, the main part of the river joins the Euphrates near al-Qurnah. This creates a new path called the Shatt-al-Arab.

History is found all along the banks of this river. In ancient times, the Tigris helped the Assyrian Empire grow. Many famous cities were built right next to the water. People used the river to water their crops in the dry land. Cities like Nineveh and Seleucia once stood near the water. The city of Lagash even used a man-made canal to get water. Today, you can still see old sites and religious groups like the Mandaeans here.

Mosul is another large city located on the river. The Mosul Dam is the largest dam in Iraq. In 2016, officials warned that if this dam broke, many people could be in danger. Between 500,000 and 1.5 million people might face floods. This shows how much people rely on the river for safety.

The Tigris is linked to many old stories and beliefs. In Sumerian myths, a god named Enki created the river. The river is also mentioned in the Bible in the Book of Genesis. It is part of the history of many different languages too. For example, Kurdish speakers call it "the Great Water." Even the name of the river has changed over thousands of years. It has moved from the word Idigna in Sumerian to Tigris in Latin.
