The city has a very long history that reaches back to ancient times. Many different people have called this place home over thousands of years.

In the past, the city was known by different names. Some people believe Alexander the Great founded a city called Nikephorion there. Later, a ruler named Seleucus II Callinicus renamed it Kallinikos.

During Roman and Byzantine times, it was an important place for trade. It even served as a spot for trading between two great empires. The city was sometimes destroyed in wars, but leaders like Justinian I rebuilt it. It was a busy urban center that was nearly as large as Damascus.

After the city fell to Muslim conquerors in the 600s, it was called al-Raqqah. This name means "the morass" because the area was marshy.

During the Abbasid period, the city became very grand. A ruler named al-Mansur built a new garrison city nearby called al-Rafiqah. This new city had massive walls and a famous mosque.

Eventually, the old city and the new city merged into one huge place. This combined area was even larger than the old capital, Damascus.

For about thirteen years between 796 and 809, Raqqa was the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate.

This was a time of great wealth and power for the city. The ruler Harun al-Rashid lived there in a large palace area. Workers from all over the region came to build the city. They also built canals from the Euphrates and Balikh rivers to bring water to farms.

Experts have found many workshops there from long ago. These workers used kilns and furnaces to make glass and pottery. Some of these items, like beautiful ewers, are still seen in museums today.

In more recent years, the city has faced many hard struggles during the Syrian civil war. It has changed hands between different groups many times. Despite these difficult years, the city remains a key part of the region's story.
