It is the capital of the Aleppo Governorate. This area is the most crowded part of the country. About 2,098,000 people live in the city today. It is the largest city in Syria by urban area. For a long time, it was the largest city in the whole country. Now, the capital city of Damascus has more people.

Aleppo is also one of the largest cities in the Levant region.

This city is one of the oldest places where people have lived. People may have lived there since the sixth millennium BC.

Long ago, the Amorites lived in the area. You can see this from digs at Tell as-Sawda and Tell al-Ansari. These sites are just south of the old city. In the third millennium BC, the city was mentioned in ancient tablets. These tablets were found in Ebla and Mesopotamia. They show that Aleppo was an important place for trade and military power.

Aleppo has had many different names through history. Some think the name comes from a word meaning "to milk."

This might be because people kept many animals there. Another idea is that the name means "white." This could describe the white soil or the famous white marble. The Hittite Empire called the city Halpa or Halpu. Later, the Greeks called it Beroea.

Even when the name changed, the local people often kept using the old names. This shows how deep the city's roots go.

For many centuries, Aleppo was a vital center for trade. It sat at one end of the Silk Road. This famous path moved goods from Central Asia to Mesopotamia. Because of this, the city grew very large and rich. It was the third-largest city in the Ottoman Empire. It was only smaller than Constantinople and Cairo.

Things changed when the Suez Canal opened in 1869. Much of the trade moved to the sea instead. Later, the city lost its connections to the sea and the Baghdad Railway. This made the city's growth slow down.

Recent years have been very difficult for the people of Aleppo. A civil war caused much fighting in the city.

Many parts of the city suffered massive destruction during the battle. About 31,000 people were killed during this conflict. However, there is hope for the future. Many parts of the city are now being rebuilt. In 2006, the city was named the Islamic Capital of Culture. People are working hard to restore its historic landmarks and old buildings.
