It is the most crowded area in the country. About 2,098,000 people live there.

This city is one of the oldest in the world. People may have lived there since the sixth millennium BC.

For a long time, Aleppo was a great center for trade. It sat on the Silk Road. This path helped goods move between many lands. Because of this, the city grew very large. It was once the third-largest city in the Ottoman Empire.

In the past, the city had many different names. The Greeks called it Beroea.

Some think the name Aleppo comes from a word meaning "to milk." This might be because of the animals kept there. Others think it refers to white soil or white marble.

Recent years have been hard for the city. A war caused much damage to many parts.
