The city is a place where many paths meet. This makes it a very useful spot for trade and travel. Many different groups of people live there together. Most residents are Arab, but there are also Kurdish, Turkmen, Circassian, and Chechen people. Many of these residents follow a religious group called Naqshbandi Sufism.

This city has a very deep history that goes back thousands of years. Long ago, the Aramean people called it Manbug. This name meant "Site of the Spring."

Later, the Assyrians ruled the area and built a royal palace there. The Greeks gave the city new names like Hieropolis. This means "City of the Sanctuary." It became a very famous holy place for many people in the ancient world.

The city was once famous for a goddess named Atargatis. Her worship was centered around a beautiful sacred lake. People would swim out into the water to decorate an altar. There were also many sacred animals and birds living in the temple area.

Today, the lake is no longer there. The spot where the water once sat has been turned into a football field. Most of the old Roman baths and theaters are also gone now.

Many strong leaders have tried to control Manbij over the centuries. The Romans used it as a capital for a province. Later, the Mongols attacked and destroyed much of the city in 1260. In more recent times, the city saw much change during the Syrian civil war. Rebels took the city in 2012, and then the Islamic State took it in 2014. Finally, the Syrian Democratic Forces captured the city in 2016.
